A member of Mansfield Ob/Gyn Associates since 1995, Dr Helgans is originally a New Jersey native. She received her B.S. in Bio-Engineering from Syracuse University in 1985. She graduated from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1989 with her eventual husband Gregory Turner (a member of Jefferson Radiology Associates) and moved on to Hartford, CT where they completed their medical training. After her residency at St Francis Hospital and Medical Center in 1993, she stayed on in private practice while her husband completed his training. They detoured to Philadelphia for his fellowship year while Dr Helgans worked for an underserved population clinic at Fitzgerald-Mercy Hospital before returning to CT.

She has been board certified since 1995 and takes part in the yearly recertification process through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is a Fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and the New England Obstetrical and Gynecological Society. Her work interests have included all aspects of her field, but since retiring from the Obstetrics side in 2019, she has enjoyed more of a focus on adolescent and menopausal issues. Having been treated for breast cancer in 2012, she finds she has a particular affinity for patients who share her history.

Dr Helgans has two children and lives in Storrs. Outside of the office, she enjoys running, reading, cooking and gardening, and also spends a good deal of time keeping up with her aging parents and “almost adult” children.
